Sri Lanka, Baby!

After passing through one of the most hardcore security checks of all times we boarded our flight out of Trivandrum and arrived at Columbo Air Force Base...uhm...I mean International Airport. There is still a civil war going on after all and even though the action is nowhere near us, a certain anxiety hangs in the air with the humidity. At least in Columbo. We are now, however, on the south east tip of the island in Welligama Bay where the official mantra seems to be "No Problem". Crystal clear water, perfect waves and amazing sea food and tropical fruit are the defining characteristics here. It's so beautiful and relaxed that Radka and I are still in a state of shock after surviving two months in India. We've rented surfboards and simply walk accross the street to ride the pertfect rollers of Welligama Bay. Or... throw them on top a Tuc Tuc (local 3 wheel transport) and head to the break at Unawatuna, Hikadowa or Medigama. You can definitely see why surfers from around the world head here. Yesterday I shared the line-up with guys (& a few ladies) from France, Japan, England and Germany. Radka's technique is coming along nicely as well. We spent her 25th birthday, dec. 20th, doing what she wanted...surfing all day. For dinner we ventured over to the only luxury resort in the area. Beautiful candel-lit tables along the beach and a buffet! After India, the sight and the the abundance of a full gourmet spread made us dizzy. I think we ate more that night than our whole time in India. The locals here have been great as well. They mix more freely with the travelers than we generaly saw on the sub-continent. Last night we were invited to a bar-b-q, sri lankan style, on the beach. Fresh grilled fish and potatos with a bit of local rum to wash it down accompanied by drumming and singing. Tomorrow we are going to look at real estate. I'm not joking. Ten grand over here will buy you an ocean front plot on about 4 acres covered in palm trees. Any one want to go in on it with me?

Merry Christmas Tee and Radka,
It's 9:30 pm Christmas Eve here and believe it or not the tree (live) is up, most of the gifts are wrapped and Mom, teli and I attended a nice Christmas service at Market Street UMC. Wonders never cease! We sat in the 4th row in Church behind the King family and their 16 Russian adoptees (14 girls and 2 boys)sitting in the 1st 2 1/2 rows. I don't know if I mentioned to you thatthe Kings are adopting 3 sisters ages 3, 6 and 8 from Russia in January. The are a beautiful as well as remarkable family. I don't if you remembered that a couple of years ago I bought 70 or 80 blue, double breasted blazers (one size) from ebay. What a great use when I presented Mike King (the Dad) 19 blazers for his present and future kids. It was a little like the three bears (19 in this case); some were too big, some were too small and some fit just right.
All is good hear but Christmas will be a bit different with you away and living a dream. I commend you both for your taking time to travel as you are. It's great to share your adventure through your blogs and periodic phone calls. Your communications make it seem like you're not really far away as we travel with you. The first order of business after a blog entry or a call is check google as to your whereabouts. Each place seems more facinating than the previous. Keep writing and keep calling! Either way makes all or days brighter,.
I hope you have a Blessed Christmas and a Healthy, Happy and Safe New Year. You are always in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Peace and God Bless,
Dad, Mom, teli and THE BUSKER
P.S.
4 acres Ocean front, covered with palm trees for $10,000.seems awesome. Investing in real estate in a foreign country is quite scary. Maybe 10 $1,000.00 investors might be better. Get some details.

Dear Tee and Radka:
We are truly shocked to see the devastation and huge loss of life as it is now being reported on CNN and the internet. We are so grateful that you were not on the beach but in a building where you could go UP and escape the flood, and that you could call home right away to let your folks know you were safe! We shudder to contemplate what could have been one of the worst Christmas days ever for the Cardaci family! Thank God you are safe!!
We hope you will be able to leave the island soon to get away from what will surely become a nightmare aftermath. Please keep up the calls home and the blog entries as you are able-
Love and hugs,
Aunt Hildy and Uncle PAul

UPDATE ON WHEREABOUTS OF TEE AND RODKA
We finally got the long awaited call at 1:15 today. They are safe & o.k.& in Columbo, capitol of S.L. Very tramatized, but grateful to be alive! Thank God!! With just the clothes on their back, they made their way with a few of their friends to higher ground where they spent the nite in a mosque before leaving the next day on a harrowing 6hr. bus ride N.to Columbo.(They did manage to recover their passports & their money;so many were no so fortunate to save anything.) Tee&Rodka will be in Columbo until they can get a flight out (they had made reservations some time ago for 1/15). Obviously, no flights are leaving Columbo to allow relief aid in.
I'm sure Tee will have quite a blog entry for you whenever he can catch his breath & collect his thoughts.
Thank you for all your prayers and concerns.
Will update you as more info comes in.
Tom & Kit Cardaci (Tee's parents)

Hi Tee,
I just received a Christmas card from your mom and dad today and was enjoying the family picture and the note about your family when I read that you were in Sri Lanka. I just felt so scared and worried about you but luckily, your dad included your blog site in the message and I found out that you were okay. What a relief! Technology sure is amazing. We will watch for updates now that we know about your site. I hope that you'll be able to continue your trip safely. It is so sad that such a beautiful spot had to be ruined. Our prayers are with you and Rodka.
Stay well,
Paul and JoEllen Youngblud
(Family friends and teachers of Tee and teli)

Thank God you both are okay, and many thanks to the Cardaci's for keeping us all informed. Nick and I have been reading your blogs and your travels have been nothing short of amazing thus far and i hope this last incident hasn't spoiled your trip or desire to keep traveling. the important thing is that you have survived what will hopefully be the worst by far in your travels. you and Radka will be in my thoughts/prayers. much love, jamie mac

Houseboats in Sausalito are, it turns out not impossible to rent and/or own and/or keep guestrooms available for friends to come and mooch in. :) missy b.
